The Ile de Vergelesses is the upper section of the les Vergelesses vineyard, and it the finest premier cru in Pernand. It is always a more ageworthy, complex and minerally wine than that produced by the slightly deeper and richer soils of les Vergelesses proper, and can often approach grand cru quality. The 2006 from Chandon de Briailles is a beautiful wine in the making, as it offers up a primary and superb nose of black raspberries, currant leaf, a bit of spiced meats, cocoa and an exotic topnote of sandalwood (that does not hail from the oak, as like all the reds here, it is raised in quite old barrels). On the palate the wine is full-bodied, pure, tight and stony, with a lovely core of fruit, impeccable balance, tangy acids and grand cru length and grip on the soil-driven finish. This will be a superb bottle. (11/2007)

A brooding nose unwillingly gives up a glimpse of high-toned dark berry fruits though the medium-bodied flavors are sweet, elegant, pure, transparent and delicious while possessing terrific definition and brimming with an intense minerality on the beautifully long finish. This too is old school but refined old school. *Sweet Spot, Outstanding!* (4/2008)
